Symbiosis restores bitcoin swaps through partners after bridge incident

Symbiosis said it recovered approximately 15 BTC after an exploit affecting its Bitcoin Bridge on September 11. The cross-chain protocol isolated the affected bridge and suspended its native bitcoin routes, while reporting that other supported routes and its Octopools product continued operating during the response.

Bitcoin swaps were subsequently restored through third-party partners Chainflip and THORChain, although Symbiosis's own bridge remained paused. The project said the recovered bitcoin was held in a team-controlled multisignature wallet. Restoring a route through partners is separate from reopening the infrastructure involved in the incident.

Symbiosis offered the attacker a 20% recovery bounty through September 13 and said it would then offer the same reward for information leading to further recoveries. It also said affected liquidity providers were being contacted directly and that a compensation framework was being developed, with criteria still to be published.

The immediate operational picture is therefore mixed: users regained access to bitcoin swaps through alternative providers, while investigation and recovery continued around the original bridge. The compensation terms and any eventual reopening remain separate milestones. The reported recovery does not establish that every affected party has already been made whole.
