Ethena adds Binance stock tokens to USDe backing strategy

Ethena is expanding the investment strategy behind its USDe synthetic dollar into tokenized equities, pairing Binance’s bStocks with equity perpetual futures. The development, announced on September 25, brings stock-linked assets into a system that has largely depended on cryptocurrency holdings and offsetting derivatives positions. Ethena said its risk committee had already approved a framework for allocating capital to these equity basis trades.

Under the arrangement, bStocks provide the spot exposure while short positions in Binance’s equity perpetual contracts hedge changes in the underlying share prices. The tokens represent interests in securities held by issuer BTech Holdings Limited. Ethena reported more than $2.9 billion in equity perpetual open interest on Binance, indicating that the derivatives market has become large enough to attract systematic trading strategies.

A basis trade seeks to earn the difference between the economics of a spot position and its corresponding derivative. Hedging reduces directional exposure, but the operation still depends on funding payments, market liquidity and the relationship between both instruments. Extending that approach to equities gives Ethena another potential source of revenue when cryptocurrency funding conditions become less attractive or more crowded across competing trading firms.

USDe supply stood at approximately $4.9 billion when the expansion was reported. For Ethena, the business question is how much additional backing can be deployed without weakening the consistency of its hedge. For Binance, the partnership adds an institutional use case for its stock tokens and equity derivatives. Actual allocations, funding conditions and redemption arrangements will determine how significant the new strategy becomes within USDe’s overall backing mix.
