FCA opens authorization applications for UK crypto businesses

The UK Financial Conduct Authority opened its crypto authorization application gateway on September 30, beginning the next phase of preparations for a broader regulatory regime. Firms intending to continue relevant UK operations are being directed to apply by February 28, 2027. The new framework is scheduled to take effect on October 25, 2027, giving businesses a defined application period before the expanded requirements become operational across the market.

The FCA said applicants will be assessed against standards covering customer protection, safeguarding of assets, market integrity and financial resilience. Existing anti-money laundering registration does not automatically provide authorization under the new regime. Businesses must demonstrate that their operations meet the applicable requirements. For crypto platforms, this turns preparation into a formal application process, requiring evidence about the systems and controls supporting the services they intend to offer in the United Kingdom.

The regulator expects to determine applications submitted during the designated period before the regime begins. Existing firms applying within that period may continue providing services, including taking on new business, while awaiting a decision if their application remains unresolved at commencement. That transition arrangement gives the application deadline practical importance. It connects the timing of a firm’s submission with the conditions under which it can keep operating during the move to the new framework.

The gateway’s opening is a procedural milestone rather than an announcement that individual crypto companies have already received approval. Firms now need to translate their products and operating models into applications that satisfy the FCA’s standards. The regulator is offering pre-application discussions and webinars to support that work. Subsequent authorization decisions will establish which businesses can provide the newly regulated services and how the UK’s crypto market develops under the expanded supervisory system.
