Solana puts Alpenglow consensus upgrade on public testnet

SOL

Solana has moved Alpenglow, a redesign of how its validators agree on the state of the chain, onto its public test network. The upgrade targets transaction finality of around 150 milliseconds, compared with roughly 12.8 seconds under the current system, without changing how users send transactions.

Solana has moved Alpenglow, a redesign of how its validators agree on the state of the chain, onto its public test network. The upgrade targets transaction finality of around 150 milliseconds, compared with roughly 12.8 seconds under the current system, without changing how users send transactions.

Alpenglow replaces the TowerBFT consensus mechanism with a voting protocol called Votor. Rather than recording a long sequence of consensus votes onchain, validators exchange votes directly and can finalize a block after one or two voting rounds. That shift is where most of the expected speed improvement comes from.

Validators joining the testnet migration must run Agave 4.3, the client maintained by Anza. The Firedancer and Frankendancer clients do not yet support Alpenglow, which matters for a network that has been working to reduce reliance on a single software implementation.

Developers have targeted an October mainnet release, but no activation date has been confirmed. The testnet period will show whether the new voting design performs under realistic conditions and whether other validator clients are ready, both of which will shape the timing of any mainnet switch.
