U.S. Bank has completed a live pilot of USBDC, its own dollar-backed stablecoin, making a cross-border payment between North American and European entities on the Stellar blockchain. The bank said the transactions remained connected to its core finance, risk, compliance, and operations systems.
The pilot tested minting, freezing, reclaiming, and redeeming the token. Freezing and clawback capabilities allow the issuer to stop tokens from moving or reverse transactions for compliance, legal, or risk reasons, and these controls operate at the protocol level on Stellar.
The test also validated the bank's internally built digital assets platform, which is designed to issue and transfer tokenized assets and connect existing banking systems to blockchains. U.S. Bank cited Stellar's global reach, near-instant settlement, and fees below one cent as reasons for the choice.
The pilot was internal, and the bank has not said the token is generally available to customers. Areas under consideration include liquidity management, collateral mobility, and cross-border treasury operations. The next step is whether USBDC moves from a single test payment to regular use with corporate clients.
